Background
Although
water has always been the main element used in fire-fighting, its
optimisation called for new methods and equipment.
Adding foaming products that have been developed by the chemical
industry makes water more effective and increases its cooling power
two-fold.
>>> Bulking and
emulsifiers
- Definition of bulking:
The ratio that exists between the volume of a solution (water +
emulsifier) used to begin with and the actual amount of foam generated
(water + emulsifier + air).

1/
Low bulking |
From
0 to 25, this type is suited to external uses where it must reach
distances of over 10 metres. It generates a heavy, water-rich
foam.
|
2/
Medium bulking |
From
25 to 300, this type is suited to both internal and external uses
for fighting oil slick fires, on retention tanks and in any situation
where you are likely to have to face large sheets of flames.
|
3/
High bulking |
From
300 to 600 and above, this product has primarily been designed
for use with the appropriate equipment in enclosed spaces or cellars
(the foam is propelled through ducts by mechanical or hydraulic
blowers). This equipment may be fixed or mobile.
High bulking systems can be set up in the event of a fire, even
when people have not all been evacuated from the premises. The
foam generated is air-rich and thus allows those unexpectedly
caught up in the event to breathe normally as they are being evacuated.

Personal and environmental safety
- In general, the emulsifiers produced are of the low toxicity
type and harmless to Man under normal usage conditions.
-
Emulsifiers, foaming solutions, foams and solutions generated
by sedimentation will not attack the environment and their biodegradable
properties satisfy French and foreign standards.
